Women’s cooperatives

Women’s cooperatives we visited were all part of CECOSESOLA’s network in the area around Barquisimeto, Venezuela. Most of them were started as a way for women to earn a living producing something useful to their community. They included Avivir, a cooperative making natural cosmetics; Esfuerzo y Compromiso (Effort and commitment), a bread making cooperative; Moncar,  a salsa (pasta sauce) making cooperative; and 8 de Marzo (named for International Women’s day) a pasta making cooperative. Almost all of these are located far outside of the city where there have been few opportunities for women to work outside of the home doing paid labor.

Read more about them in an article written by a student in our class:  click here.
